Afie Mirshah-Nayar

The goal of my e-folio (electronic portfolio) is to show how my activities and artifacts support the goals of the 6 professional standards for Instructional Specialists, the roles and responsibilities of Staff Development Content Specialists, the OOD mission, and the SDCS mission.

Afie Mirshah-Nayar holds a bachelors degree from the University of Maryland in English Literature with a concentration in the literature of women and minorities.  In addition, Ms. Mirshah-Nayar holds a graduate degree from the M.A.T. ESOL program at American University. She has worked as an ESOL teacher at John F. Kennedy and Albert Einstein High Schools in Montgomery County. Currently she works in the Office of Organizational Development for MCPS as the secondary ESOL Content Specialist. For the 2001-2002 and the 2004-2005 school years, Ms. Mirshah-Nayar was named as one of America's top teachers and recognized in Who's Who Among America's Teachers.  For the past three years Ms. Mirshah-Nayar has represented the interests of ESOL students by serving on the Maryland State Department of Education's High School Assessment Bias and Sensitivity Review Program. Ms. Mirshah-Nayar has held several leadership positions which include serving as the chairperson for the ESOL Joint Problem Solving Liaison Committee and as the elected representative for High School ESOL Teachers on the Councils for Teaching and Learning. In addition, she is the current co-chair for the Secondary Special Interest Group of WATESOL (Washington Area Teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages) and is pursuing her Administration and Supervision certification at Hood College and her doctoral degree in Educational Policy and Leadership from the University of Maryland.

 

Staff Development Content Specialists are responsible for providing ongoing professional development to those responsible for implementing the curriculum.
 
Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver professional development related to curriculum, assessment, and instruction
  • Coach and consult with teacher leaders as they support professional development in their schools
  • Provide resources to teacher leaders as they support implementation of the curriculum
  • Facilitate the development of professional learning communities as related to curriculum, assessment, and instruction

Roles

  • Communicate the purpose and importance of professional development as it relates to curriculum, assessment, and instruction
  • Provide ongoing professional development to those responsible for the implementation of the curriculum
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external partners to support curriculum, assessment, and instruction
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the professional development related to curriculum, assessment, and instruction
  • Increase knowledge and skills necessary to support teachers and teacher leaders as they implement the skillful teaching of curriculum
 

OOD Mission

Our mission is to develop all staff and improve the effectiveness for the organization to ensure high achievement for every students.

SDCS Mission

To promote student achievement by providing high quality professional development* that builds the capacity of MCPS staff to effectively implement the Pre-K to 12 curriculum.

Reflection
There will be a reflection section at the bottom of each page for each of the 6 MCPS standards.  In the reflection section I will highlight one concept that ties the selected artifacts together.
